GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHITTON'S FIFTH VICTORY. WIN BY ONE STROKE. MORPETH IN FOURTH PLACE. By Telegraph—-Press Association—Copyright. (Keceived August 30, 5.5 p.m.) SYDNEY,, August 30. The open golf championship of Australia was won yesterday by Ivo Whitton for the fifth time, after a stirring final. His score was 301 for 72 holes.

Then came the youthful stars, Jim Ferrier, the New South Wales champion, with 302, and Harry Williams,-the Victorian champion, 303. Sloan Morpeth took ■ 304, Fawcetfc (N.S.W.) 305, Dobson and Eyre (N.S.W.) 306 each, Fetters, Bolger and Howard (N.S.W.) 307 each. The play throughout was of the highest standard, in spite of the high wind.

Whitton's game in the final round was superb, and enabled him to retrieve what looked a doubtful position at the end of the third round. When he started yesterday morning, he was five strokes behind the leader, Clark, and the crowd neglected him for the younger players, who were brilliant. The Victorian amateur thus did the final 18 holes with a small following, who, however, -were rewarded with, sparkling golf. Ferrier had the match in his grasp, bub was strangely bunkered at the 14th hola in the afternoon, when the green was well open. At the last hole he still was able to tie with Whitton with a five, but had a bad drive, second and third. Then he made a brilliant recovery, bnt his putt ran in and out of the hole. This drew a sympathetic gasp from the silent gallery.

Williams started with a slice into * bunker and his anxiety later cost him strokes and the chance of the title. Morpeth played strongly." A surprise was the failure of Hattersley, the amateur title holder, whox crashed with 85.

Ivo Whitton," who ig 38, belongs to th« Royal Melbourne Club. - He won the Australian open championship in 1912, 1913, 1926 and 1929; the Australian amateur championship, 1922-23; the Victorian amateur championship, 1919, 1920, 1922-23-24. He has also won the Queeensland open and the New South Wales amateur titles. -
