COMPETITORS IN THE FINALS

In the women's national lawn tennis championships at Foresthills, Mrs. Whittingstall (England) entered the finals by defeating Miss Nutha.il (England), 6—2, 3—6, 6—4. She will to-morrow meet in the final Mrs. Wills-Moody, who defeated Miss Mudford (England), 6 —2, 6—4. In the doubles Sirs. Whittingstall and Miss Nuthall reached the finals by defeating Miss Cruickshank and Sirs. Van Ryn, 6—3, 6—2. The other finals pair are Miss Dorothy Round (England) and Miss Helen Jacobs, who defeated Miss Mudford and Mrs. Shepherd Barron (England), 6—2, 9—7. The finals match will be played on Monday, owing to the fact that Miss Hound, who is a minister's daughter, has refused to play on Sunday. In the prior round of tho singles Mrs. Whittingstall provided a surprise by defeating Miss Jacobs, 3—6, 6—3, B—6. Miss Mudford defeated Mrs. Harper, 4—6. 6—3, 6—2, and Miss Nuthall defeated her team mate, Sirs. Shepherd Barron, 6-2, 6-1.
NEWPORT TOURNAMENT.
PERRY LOSES SINGLES.
FIRST DEFEAT IN AMERICA. (Received August 23, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, August 22. At the invitation lawn tennis tournament at Newport Casino, Vines (America) defeated Perry (England) in the final of the singles, 6—2, 6—4, 6—B, 6—2. This was Perry's first defeat on his present visit to the United States. In the final of tlie doubles Vines and Glcdhill defeated Doeg and Lott, 3—6, 6—3/5—7, 13—11, 6—A. In the semi-finals Vines and Glcdhill defeated Tidball and Stoeffen (Los Angeles), B—6, 6—4, 6 —2, and Doeg and Lott defeated Perry and Hughes, 5-7, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.
