MOTOR-CARS WRECKED.

MARRIED WOMAN KILLED.

SITTING BESIDE HUSBAND.

INJURIES TO SIX OTHERS. [BY TELEGRAPH- —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] MASTERTON, Sunday. A head-on collision between two motorcars on the Masterton-Carterton road at Waingawa about 5.40 yesterday afternoon resulted in the death of a woman passenger, the six other occupants of the cars receiving various injuries, while one of them, an elderly woman, is now in the Mastertori Hospital in a critical condition. Details of the victims are:— Killed. Mrs. William Grose, aged 33. of Masterton. Injured. Mrs. Greathead,. aged 70, mother of Mrs. Grose. Compound fracture of th« left wrist, scalp and facial injuries, concussion and severe shock. Condition critical. William Grose, aged 40, dental mechanic, of Masterton, scalp and facial injuries and abrasions Condition satisfactory. Thomas Grose, aged 10, scalp and facial injuries. Condition satisfactory. Robert Coulston, head butcher at the Waingawa abattoirs, scalp and facial injuries, shock and severe bruises'. Condition satisfactory. Thomas Bernie, labourer, of Waingawa, head injuries. Leonard Unsworth, chemist's assistant, of Masterton, minor head injuries. The first car, a Ford open touring model, was driven by Mr. Grose, who had with him as passengers his wife and small son, his wife's mother, Mrs. Greathead, and Mr. Unsworth, a friend. The other car. a two-seater, was driven by Mr. Coulston, who was accompanied by Mr. Bernie.

Mr. Grose was driving south from Masterton, and on a long stretch of straight road near Waingawa, met two cars coming in the opposite direction. After passing the first, of the north-bourn? cars, Mr. Grose's car was involved in a collision with the second car, driven by Mr. Coulston, both cars striking with terrific force and being wrecked. A feature of the collision was that no one was thrown out of either car. Mrs. Grose, who was sitting with her husband in the front seat, was killed instantly, having apparently been struck by so mo flying object. Dr. Helen Cowie and Dr. Forsyth immediately went to the scene of the accident and summoned an ambulance to remove the victims to tho hospital. Mrs. Greathead, Mr. Grose and his son and Mr. Bernie were admitted to the institution, while Mr. Unsworth and Mr. Coulston, after receiving treatment, were taken to their 'homes. Mr. Coulston, however, was admitted to the hospital to-day. An operation was performed on tho boy Thomas Groso this morning.
