THE TROTTING TRACK.

ACTIVITIES AT EPSOM.

BENEFICE SPRINTS FAST.

CARL MACK'S IMPROVEMENT. Conditions for training at Epsom on Saturday were ideal and a good deal of interesting work was done by horses engaged at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting next Saturday The dirt track, which had been well prepared, provided excellent footing, which was conducive to fast times. Benefice (K. Morrison) was to have gone frolu tho mile from a standing start, but she jigged badly for 100 yards. As she reached the mile and a-half post she' was going at top and from this point ran a flying mile in 2.12. Continuing to tho two furlongs peg sho registered 2.45| for ten furlongs, a smart performance. Benefice displayed all her customary brilliancy on a track that suited her admirably. Auto Machine (A. Brown), after being warmed up with a couplo of spurts over separate Quarters, jumped awpy at the two mijes, and with six furlongs covered at about a 2.20 gait, he was picked up by Dad's Hope (W. Clifton), who had previously worked a useful mile and a-half in 3.44. Dad'.-) Hope made the pace merry, cutting out a - mile in 2.151. Then Auto Machine closed ori him and finished strongly to record 4.36 for two miles, his last half showing 1.5 4-5. ' Dad's Hope registered 2.4!) for ten furlongs. Carl Mack (P. J. Smith) gave a finished display of trot, ting when sent over a mile and a-half, after working steadily for four circuits. The trotter roachod tho mile disc in 2.30, going correctly and comfortably, and the pace being increased, lie stepped attractively to the post in 3.38J, the final half being trotted' in 1.8). Carl Mack's effort was a great improvement on his showings earlier in the week. Jock Bingen's Two Miles. .-#> -■ ■ : Tumatakuru (C. Smith) and Jock Bingen (If. J. Smith) stepped off together for a two miles try-out, but tho trotter quickly broke up and the pair returned to the starting point again. Jock Bingen hopped away smartly and setting a warm pace led Tumatakuru to tho half-mile, in 1.9, where the trotter was steadied and lliey reached the milo in 2.20. The next half was run in 1.10, and just as the pair .threatened tq, record a fast task, Tumatakuru slackened and Jock Bingen went away several lengths to tho good. The trottor began to weaken in tho run home, but in spite of a liberal U3Q of the whip, Tumatakuru would uot do his best and finished a second behind Jock Bingen, wlio ran the two miles in A.m. Student Prince (J. .O'ivane) traversed a sound mile and a-cjuarter without being fully extended. He was then saddled up and, ridden by C. Smith, brought Kewpie's Triumph C,J. Geo) and Tumatakuru (P. J. Smith), who was having a repeat essay, home over the last mile of a mile and a-half trial. Kewpie's Triumph and Tumatakuru took 1.1*2 3-5 to go to the mile post, where Student Prince joined in aud led over the next half in 1.8 2-5. In a hard finish Kewpie's Triumph came through to catch t.he saddle horse, and register 3.28 4-5 for the full journey. Student Prince recorded 2.1G 1-5 for the mile.

Margaret "Wallace (E. Sandall), Modern Light (G. Phipps), Oliver Thorpe (W. Willelts) and Prince Etawah (A. Shepherd) went away from the mile and a-half disc ,in that order. Prince Etawah being several lengths back. With a furlong covered Explosion (W. Clifton joined in alongside l'rinco Etawah. Margaret Wallace was .just in front of Modern Light at the milo in 2.26, bub a quarter further on Oliver Thorpe.made a forward move, and Explosion ran into third place. They were stepping briskly in the straight, but Margaret Wallace did best to finish in front in 3.34, with Oliver Thorpo, Explosion, Modern Light and Prince Etawah next in order. Going another two furlongs Explosion trotted 345. Margaret Wallace greatly pleased by hor forward running and allowing that she had the inside position all the way she showed both speed and stamina when it came to the final effort. Sho ran the last half in 1.8. Oliver Thorpo pnfc in Bound work in tho final circuit, and Prince Etawah, who seemed unable to get going in the early stages, also made up a lot of leeway in the last two furlongs. Modern Light went well for ten furlongs and appeared slightly shtjrt of a run. Mazda's Good Showing.

Gold Jacket (L. McMalion) worked three laps free-legged at a sound clip, and then ran a mile and a-quarter with Mazda (W. Clifton). Gold Jacket went away at a tangle, giving tho filly a chance to put daylight between them. Mazda led to the half-inilo post in 1.50, where Gold Jacket began to increaso the speed. He was almost on terms with the novice at the straight entrance, but it was only in the last fifty yards that he shook her off to register 2.56 for tho journey. Mazda, who ran the ten furlongs in '2.56 '2-5, showed a fine turn of speed by covering the last half in I.G 2-5. Moko Chief (W. Evans) revelled m an assignment over twelve furlongs, which he covered in 3.33 2-5. tho first half-mile taking 1.15, and the second and third 19 1-5 Moko Chief is in fine order for his Mount Eden Handicap engagement Moko Girl (J. Gee) gave another solid exhibition of trotting over a mile and ahalf in 3.41 J. She was not bustled for the first lap. but the pace was "increased and she reached the mile in 2.305, and covered the final half resolutely in, 1.11. Moko Girl has made good progress lately a_nd while she may not yet be class enough for some of her Introductory Handicap rivals, her. solidness will be much in her fj^our. Gold Treasure (L. Laver) and Etta Cole (A. J. Julian) worked at. a useful pace over two miles and while neither >vos fully extended at any. part, Etta Cole trotted the distance in 4.50, showing a 2.20 gait over the Inst circuit. The: mare has impressed in her training, "during the past week and promises to be in crood tVhn on Saturday; Gold Treasure, while .showing advancement, is likelv to be rather backward. ' Win Huon (C. G. Lee) wns not on a time-making mission while negotiating two miles in company with a novice pacer, but lie trotted boldly and solidly. win Huon is- looking well and has become more solid. Parish Belle Trots Well.

' Pirate Picture (J. Russoll) was given useful work, without registering any fast times. She covered ono half-mile in 1.16. and another in 1.14. Pirate Picture is still on the jolly' side. . Dun Direct (A. Patten) accompanied batin. Bird (G. Coles) for three circuits, the saddle candidate sprinting over the last lap at ii, 2.2(5 clip. Great Fame (A. T. Newdick), after warming up over a couple .of circuits, was joined by Dan Direct and tliey worked a mile and a-half at a useful pace, although not being sent against the watch. Dan Direct went an extra half at a shade better than i 2.20 gait. Parrish Belle fC. C,r. .Lee) did not tempt to put n foot wrong while covering two miles in sm. She trotted along very smoothly and easily and could have improved on tho time if required. Parrish Belle is bearing a healthy appearance, and will be;ready to tackle her difficult task on Saturday. , , , , Gaza (L. Mahoney) paced resolutely over n mile and a-quarter, which he traversed at a 2.20 rate all the way, Gaza, who Ims come through a sound preparation creditably, was running on strongly at the finish, and has improved ill staying abu- '' Wood vale (A. Or. Warnock) paced solidly over a mile and a-half but was rot at anything like his best speed until the last three furlongs, when ho sprinted with good dash. Tti spite of the recent interruption in hi a training, Wood vale is in good heart for his Mnssey Memorial engagement. Cleao (H. Hendriksen) gave her 'usual useful display over three circuits with a good burst over occasional quarters. Cleao has made good progress during the ' last few weeks and will strip fit on Saturday. * Mountain Guide (S. Titter) was not fully extended over three laps with Woitny Patch (E. Tuke). When to work another two circuits by himself. Mountain Guide recorded 2.30 for a mile. - La.Triumph (E.
