MOTOR UNION CONFERENCE.
SPEED OF HEAVY VEHICLES.
OPPOSITION TO INCREASE.
[BY XELEGHAFH.—PRESS ASSOCXA33DS.] HA WEILL, Satarday.
Officers elected at, the North Island Motor Union's Conference were:—President. Mr. W. O'Callaghan (Hawera}; vice-presidents, Dr. A. Porritt (Wangainii), Mr. J. H. Edmundson (Hawke's Bay).
The next conference "will be held in Palmerston North and the half-yearly meeting at the Chateau Tongariro. The conference decided to oppose the increase in the permissible speed of heavy commercial vehicles, as proposed under the heavy traffic regulations, on the grounds that a greater speed by such vehicles would greatly increase the costs of road and bridge maintenance and would substantially increase- the danger to the travelling public.
The position of motorists who commit offences against by-laws or motor regulations, or become involved in accidents, and are compelled to give evidence at the town at -which the offence or mishap occurred, instead of being able to give evidence in the town where they reside, was again discussed- It was decided that the North and South Island unions should combine in making a strong representation to the Minister of Justice to have the position altered.
