THE LICENSING POLL.
DISMISSAL OF CANVASSERS.
OFFICIAL CONTRADICTION.
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.]
NEW PLYMOUTH, Sunday
It is reported that, tho New Zealand Licensed Association has discharged all canvassers throughout tho Dominion. Six canvassers, it is stated, were discharged in the New Plymouth electorate and a similar number in every other electorate in New Zealand. It is estimated that 500 men are- affected by this action.
A denial of the statement that canvassers had been dismissed by the Licensed Victuallers' Association was made last evening by Sir Alfred Bankart, president of the National Council of the Licensed Trade of Npw Zealand. Sir Alfred said there was absolutely no justification for the report, which was quite unfounded. To take such a step the trade would have to be quite certain of the postponement of this year's licensing poll, whereas a decision was still being awaited.
