THE WHEAT DUTIES.
Sir, —Your correspondent " Forward Auckland " has unconsciously hit the nail on the head. The primary producers have been forced to accept about sevenelevenths of the income they received two years ago, and he wants the wheat grower to bring his price down to that proportion. if this happened and everybody accepted seven-elevenths to-day.the fanner would be a happier man and more prosperous. But as nobody will willingly come down so much, and many grumble at a reduction of one-tenth, it is obvious that we must tako another line, and wherever we can help a primary producer to get a price in ratio to what others are getting we should do so. The poultry industry has had higher protection for years than the wheat industry has bad, or wants. W. Machin.
