MUSHROOM CULTIVATION.
OUT-OF-SEASON SUPPLIES. SMALL QUANTITIES ON SALE.
Mushrooms have been exceptionally plentiful this year, and at least one shopkeeper iu the city is still offering small supplies, grown under glass. A wholesale merchant stated yesterday that in England mushrooms aro extensively grown in hothouses. Ifo did not think, however, that it would be possible to start such an industry in New Zealand at present, as the Dominion's small population would not yield a sufficiently largo demand. To undertake cultivation for profit between seasons it was essential to have a market which would reach thickly-populated areas such as exist in England and European countries. Although attempts to grow mushrooms under glass were being mado at Clevedon and in other districts there was little likelihood of this cultivation being placed on a commercial basis. Prices were maintained at a very low level throughout tho year, and when tho season was at its height they dropped to 3d and 4b a lb. Even the lato supplies, which aro of quite good quality, are offered at only 2s a pound.
