AID FOR REFUGEES.

NANSEN MEMORIAL APPEAL, DOMINION SUBSCRIPTIONS. .An international appeal is being made for a memorial fund to enable the humanitarian work of the late Dr. Fridtjof Nansen to bo completed. For 10 years as High Commissioner of the League of Nations, first for the repatriation of prisoners of war and later for the protection and assistance of refugees, Dr. Nansen gave his time and strength to the league without reserve. Nearly 500.000 prisoners of v. .ir, belong* ing to over 30 different nations, were re* patriated, .and he helped to make tolerable the lot of over 1,250,000 Greek, 1,000,000 Russian. 300,000 Armenian and some tens of thousands of Assyrian, Assyro-Chaldean, Bulgarian and Turkish refugees. When Dr. Nansen died his work for the League of Nations was unfinished, and there remain a considerable number of refugees who need protection and assistant There are in various European countries,, in China and in Asia Minor some 170,000 refugees unemployed although able to. work, and over 60,000 aged, infirm, war invalid and infant refugees for whosa welfare little or no provision exists. To complete that work further funds ar» now required. Dr. Nansen had hoped t-oi issue the appeal himself during tjje summer of 1930. anticipating that the whola of the material part of the refugee problems could be finally by the end of 1939.
