SHORT CUT TO BEACH.

FORMING NEW CAUSEWAY. GREY LYNN-POINT CHEVALIER. Men on relief work have been employed for some weeks in the preliminary work for the connection of the western portion of Grey Lynn with tho Point Chevalier district by a causeway between Garnet Road. Grey Lynn, and Meola Road, Point Chevalier. The causeway will cross two waterways, Motion's Creek and Meola Creek, and will reduce tho travelling distance between Grey Lynn and Point Chevalier Beach by about 1£ miles. A bridge over Motion's Creek has already been constructed to one-third of its ultimate width to allow for the deposit of any surplus filling that might bo available. Rubbish, principally from the Freeman's Bay destructor, has been used for filling purposes, and it is in levelling tho filling that the relief workers have been engaged. The method by which the work is being carried out will make it a very inexpensive undertaking. Tho City Council owns an area to the west of Garnet Road, which formerly was a dump and was transferred to tho city when the merger with Grey Lynn took place. The total length of the road will be 3380 ft.. With a carriageway of 30ft. and two footpaths each 12ft. wide, the road will have a total width of 54ft. Both bridges will have a clear span over the water of 20ft. That over Motion's Creek has a minimum headroom of sft. at highwater and that over Meola Creek will have a minimum of 10ft. 4in. A fuliwidth carriageway of 30ft. and two footpaths, each "6ft. wide, will bo provided over each bridge. It is estimated that the cost of Iho finished causeway will be between £II,OOO and £12,000.
