DAVIS CUP CONTEST.
BRITAIN MEETS AMERICA. AUSTIN IN GOOD FORM. INTER-ZONE FINAL AT PARIS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received July 19, 5.5 p.m.) PARIS. July 18. In the inter-zone final in the Davis Cup contest Britain met America. In the singles Austin (Britain) beat Wood (America), 2—6, 6—o, B—6, 7 —5, and Shields (America) beat Perry, 10 —8, 5—4, 6—2. In the doubles Lott and Van Ryn (America) beat Hughes and Perry, 6—l, 6—3, 4—6, 6—3. While Perry in the singles played like a beaten man almost from the start, Austin was confident throughout and he repeatedly found vulnerable spots in Wood's defence. In the second set the Englishman's vigorous tennis swept Wood of! his feet. Austin won the set in 10 minutes, the American scoring only seven points in five games.
Perry led s—l against Shields, but the American then started a devastating attack with rasping drives and terrific services.
