TWO WHALES KILLED.
AN EXCITING CHASE.
THRILLS FOR SPECTATORS.
A Blenheim party while in a launch last week had the thrilling experience of wit* nessiog tho Te Awaite whalers make two captures. From Tory Channel they were able to see that there was something afoot out in the strait, and tho launehmen set a course which brought them up with the chase just in time for
the harpooning and the kilL. The sea was fairly choppy, adding to the excitement of the occasion, and tho spectators were thrilled by the skill of the helmsmen of the speedy whaleboatv who seemed to flirt with death as they manoeuvred around the huge' mammals to allow the expert gunners to place first the harpoons and then the killing bombs. The launch party witnessed the whol# process of taking a whale right from ths chase to the stage where the vast carcases are inflated and towed to the fac-
Tory on shore. > : These two kills bring Mr. J. A. Perano s party's total for the season up to 16 whales. This is lower than . last year 8 tally at the same date, but it is understood that the whales are all i n ceptionally good condition and the oil yield has been excellent. Thus, though captures have been fewer, the oil toutput. is well up to las*, year's figures.
