STIPENDS OF BISHOPS.
POSITION OF SUFFRAGANS. OPPOSITION TO INCREASE. The Bishop of St. Albans, Dr. Furse, presented at the Convocation of Canterbury, at Westminster recently, the report of a joint committee of both Houses recommending that suffragan bishops should have a stipend of at least £I2OO a year, with an official, residence and a pension of at. least £SOO a year. The Bishop of Southwark, Dr. Garbett, said that his own two suffragan bishops thought the proposal most inexpedient. It „ would be misunderstood in the country generally, because salaries and wages were # now being reduced. The debate was adjourned. The Bishop of Barking, Dr. Inskip, speaking on the same proposal in thfl Lower House, said that most suffragan bishops shared his experience of being poorer men than when they were consecrated. The Bishop of Woolwich, Dr. Hough, said he felt very strongly that the proposed minimum was an excessive one. The Bishop of Kingston, Dr. Hawkes, said if the stipends of the 22 suffragan bishops were so increased it would mean raising an additional sum of about £3OOO a year. The minimum-salary proposal was rejected.
