Mrs. A. R. Jones, of Toronto, is staying at the Grand Hotel. Dr. and Mrs. E. B. Gunson were recent visitors to the Chateau. Mrs. J. Sparkes, of England, is visiting Auckland, and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mrs. Oliver Young, of England, is visiting Auckland, and is staying at the Grand Hotel. Mrs. T. C. Webster has left by car for Wellington, where she will be spending a few days. Mrs. W. B. Colbeck, of Auckland, is visiting Lower Hutt, where she is the guest of Mrs. Vivian Riddiford. Mrs. E. L. Darley, of Ladies' Mile, Remuera, is visiting Pahiatua, and will return to Auckland in a few days. Miss Joyce Dodds, of Huarau, is visiting Auckland, and is at present the guest of Mrs. J. Somervell, of Avondale. Miss Gladys Gamman, of Epsom, who recently returned from England, left last week for Wanganui, where she intends to reside. Mj\ and Mrs. Cyril Chtulkigh and their two young sons, of California, who have been staying at the Grand Vuc Hotel, St. Heliers, left on Monday for Wellington on their return journey. Mrs. Lionel Benjamin, of Dunedin, who ■has been paying an extended visit to Auckland as the guest of Mrs. Hugo Friedlander, Seaview Road, Jlemuera, left yesterday for Whangarei. She will return to Auckland later. At the monthly meeting of the Mount Albert branch of the W.C.T.U., held last week, Miss Carnachan gave an address on "Women's Work and the Children's Courts," which was much appreciated. It. was reported that the jumble sale held the week previously had provided the branch with a credit .balance. Mcsdames Gillon and Hills were the hostesses for the afternoon. -"The Passion Play of Oberammergau" was the subject of an address given by Mrs.. English at the monthly meeting of the Takapuna branch of the League of Mothers held in. the Parish Hall yesterday afternoon. Mrs. J. Thompson presided over a largo gathering of members and thanked Mrs. English on behalf , of (hose present for her instructive talk. Tea served by Mrs. T. Arthur, Mrs. C. Arthur, Mrs. Hannaford and Mrs. McMurtrie, concluded the afternoon. . Among the entertainment being provided for tho visiting hockey teams from all parts of tho Auckland Province was an enjoyable social evenings given by the Auckland ladies' hockey teams and the executive, in the Y.W.C.A. social room on Monday. The room was attractively decorated with streamer!, in which every team's colours were represented, and bowls of wattle. The programme, which was arranged by Mrs. B. Mason and Miss M. Fryer Raisher, included items by the Misses* M. and 11. Matthews and Miss P. H. Dawson, who sang; Miss J. Ross, who recited; and the Misses A. and E. Graham, who gave fancy dances. A dance given by the Unemployed Women's Association, assisted by the Auckland City Rovers Football Club, was held at Romano's Cabaret last evening. The dance hall was particularly attractive with softly shaded lights and hanging baskets of flowers and ferns overhead. Tables were also set out for euchre at, one end of the cabarot. A feature of tho.,evening was tho orchestra, Foote's Von Zalinskies, who played the latest dance music, which was repeatedly encored. Supper was served during the evening by'the members of the commit tee which comprised Mrs. Stowe, Mrs. Ashby, Mrs. Hookway and Mrs. Beale. The Associate Members' branch of the National Council of Women held a conversazione in the Y.W.C.A. rooms, when e<u enjoyable evening was spent. Interesting addresses were given by Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Dyson, Mrs. Kemp and Mrs. Cowie. Crayon sketching was cleverly done by Mrs. Dyson and the " Waiohine" Maori party gave a number of musical items, which were greatly enjoyed. Mrs. Winks thanked members for gifts toward her home for unemployed girls. Mrs. Drcavcr urged members to work hard toward getting a. permanent home for tho National Council and Miss Carnahan, Dominion president, spoke of tho great benefit a home of their own would bo. Supper was served at the conclusion of the evening. A successful dance was held by the St. Joseph's Tennis Club in St. Joseph's Hall, Otahuhu, on Saturday evening. Cards were provided for non-dancers and a tournament in euchre was played. Ihe winners were Mrs. Baxter, 1; Mrs. Loder, 2; and Mrs., White consolation. 'J'he winners in the men s section were Mr. Robinson, 1; Mr. King, 2; and Mr. McGliee consolation. A full dance programme was enjoyed and a Monte Carlo waltz competition was won by Miss Williams and her partner. Among those present were: Mrs. McCowatt, Mrs. Baxter, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. White, Miss Rene Ryan, Miss Lawes, Miss Bailey, Miss Graham, Miss Arlington, Miss Williams, Miss Collins, Miss Morgan, Miss Darby, Miss MacMoran, Miss Greenhalgh, Miss B. White, Miss Brady, Miss McLaughlin, Miss J. McLaughlin, Miss D. Bailey, Miss R. Horan Miss H. Iloran, Miss Smith, Miss O'Grady, Miss M. Eeid, Miss O'BriQn, Miss Stack, Miss Stansfield, Miss James, Miss 11. Greenhalgh, Miss M. Lawes, Miss R. Ryan, and Miss White. Diocesan Synod week _ has been made very pleasant for tho visiting and local clergy, as afternoon and evening tea has been arranged each day by Mrs. Sprott in the side room of tho Synod Hall, states a Wellington exchange. On Saturday a delightful afternoon was given at Bishopscourt, when the Bishop of Wellington and Mrs. Sprott entertained the clergy of tho diocese and a number of Wellington church-people. The weather cleared up and Bishopscourt was a very pleasant place, with blazing fires and many beautiful flowers. Arum lilies were generously used, with winter foliage, while yellow narcissi made the tea tables bright and fragrant. Tho bishop and M.rs, Sprott received tho guests in tho wide hall, and threo other reception rooms were filled with guests. Tljpir Excellencies were present later in the afternoon, being accompanied bv Lieutenant Elworthy, R.N. Tho Lady Bledisloe was in a heather mixture tweed ensemble, with touches of tomato-red, her beretta being to match, and she woro also handsome fox furs. Mrs. Sprott was in silvergrey lace over satin, and a wrap of blackgeorgette and lace. She was assisted by Mr. and Mrs. Coleridge, the latter wearing brown flowered chiffon, Miss Campbell in palo grey, and Miss Mollie Coleridge in a black satin frock. Other friends assisted as well, and a gramophone provided some well-chosen music.
