MILITARY TRAINING.
NEW VOLUNTARY SCHEME.
PROGRESS WITH RECRUITING.
FIRST DOMINION RETURN.
[B\' TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON. Monday.
Satisfactory progress is being made in recruiting under tho voluntary system of military training, according to a statement made by the Minister of Defence, Hon. J. G. Cobbe. Tho Minister said ho did not desire the commands to hasten unduly any recruiting. Ho much preferred that care should bo exercised in selecting the best class of recruit rather than that efforts should bo directed toward completing the establishments at tho earliest possible moment.
Mr. Cobbe made available for publication the following figures, which illustrate the progress with recruiting made to date:—Mounted Rifles, establishment 1620, recruits enlisted, 367; artillery, 2192, 757; engineers, 678, 149; signals, 291, 117; infantry, 3756, 1091; Army Service Corps, 309, 143; Medical Corps, 276, 127; totals, 9122, 2751. These figures do not include officers and bandsmen. The establishment of the Mounted Rifles for the Northern Command is assured, but attestation is awaiting the termination of the brigade camp.
