FRENCH NATIONAL DAY.
TAKING OF THE BASTILLE.
CELEBRATION IN AUCKLAND,
The 142 nd anniversary of the taking of the Bastille by the Paris revolutionists will be celebrated to-day by French subjects throughout the world as " National Day." The downfall of the fortress, which was taken as a symbol of the old regime, was immediately acknowledged to mark the establishment of the Republic, and July 14 has been recognised from 1790 to the present day as the birthday of the French nation in its present form.
In honour of the festival, Monsieur Edouard Joubert, the new French Consul, gave a dinner last evening a\. the Star Hotel. Among the guests were the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, Mr. W. F. Boyle, Consul for the United States, Mr. A. M. Ferguson, Consul for Belgium, Commander Berthou, and the officers of the local branch of the Alliance Francaise. In a happily conceived speech, Monsieur Joubert expressed his thanks for the cordial welcome he had received from the authorities and the people of Auckland, and his best wishes for the prosperity of the city and the future friendly relations between New Zealand and France.
