WOMEN'S INSTITUTES.

Helensville. —At a largely attended meeting of the institute Mrs. Chafey gave an interesting travel talk. The speaker was presented with a bouquet of violets and asparagus fern. Mrs. Baddely gave a lessoj? in raffia work. A case of bottles of home-made jam was forwarded to Sister Esther, of Auckland.

Ngaruawahia.—A meeting was held recently with the object of forming ' a Ngaruawahia branch of the Women's Institute. Mrs. Irwin, president of the Auckland Provincial Federation, outlined the purposes for which institutes were formed. Owing to the boisterous weather there was a small attendance and a small temporary committee was elected to arrange for a future meeting and for the enrolment of members.

Pukekohe.—The monthly meeting of the Pukekohe Institute took the form of an open night. Members of the neighbouring institutes wero present, also friends of members. A concert programme, including humorous sketches and a play by members, was given. The president, Mrs. J. ll.' Wyatt, explained the aims and objects of the institute. Supper was dispensed by the Pukekohe members.

Taupiri.—At a meeting of the Taupiri Institute an address was given by Mrs. Trownson on "The food value of honey." This was followed by a short talk on seasonable work in the gardens, given by Mrs. C. Williams. Great interest was taken in a table showing a great variety of articles made by members at a cost not exceeding Is 6d. A ballot was taken to discover which article was generally deemed the best, the winner being Mrs. C. Williams, whose exhibit was a workbox, and the second prize-winner, Miss Taylor, with a toy elephant. All the articles are to bo donated to the Plunket Society bazaar. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Murphy, Baucke, sen., S. A. Clarke, J. Hunter, W. Sing, Burman and Miss B. Taylor. Te Puke.—At a meeting of the institute a number of Papamoa members were welcomed. An interesting and useful lesson in glove-making was given by Mrs. McNaughton. A paper on the League of Nations was read by Mrs. Crowley. Afternoon tea was served, the hostesses being Mesdames Barrow, A. Washer and G. Sweetman.

Turua. —The monthly meeting of the Turua Women's Institute took the form of a musical afternoon, arranged by Mrs. Henry. A competition, the "best article made from old stockings," was won by Mrs. Vause, who made a clever black and white dog. The second prize went to Mrs. Peat, for two beautifully worked feeders. Misses Matthews and Tizard acted as judges. The hostesses were Mesdames Robertson and Harvey.

Waerenga.—Members of the Waerenga Women's Institute held a very enjoyable card evening recently at Mrs. W. B. Carter's residence, for the purpose of raising funds for the Plunket Society. The successful players in the five hundred tournament wero Mrs. Gardner and Mr. Chambers. Supper was served by the various members present.
