FAMILY ALLOWANCES.

Sir,—ln Monday's Herald I soe Mr. Thornes, in replying to "A Mother of Nine," says if her husband's wages do not exceed £4 a week, she can claim through tho State family allowance 2s for each child under 15. Now we have nine children, seven of whom are under 15, and we applied for the said allowance and received word back that it was now subject to the 10 per cent, cut., and as my husband had averaged £4 we were riot entitled" to it. During tho last three months our wages were very much under the £4, so I would like to know if Mr. Thornes is correct. Another Mother of Nine.

[The facts are as the above correspondent states. Owing to the 10 per cent, cut family allowances are now paid only on wages at or below £3 12s per week. Further, the family wages are based on tho average of the year prior to the date of application so that in this case the 10 per cent, cut has been given a very harsh retrospective application.—Editor Herald.]
