"FATHERS' DAY."
SERVICES AT ST. MATTHEW'S.
' "Fathers' Day" was celebrated at special services in St. Matthew's Church yesterday when an appeal was made to men of the church to take a greater interest in its activities and to accept to the full the responsibilities of fatherhood and citizenship. The setting apart of a Sunday in May as "Mothers' Day" for the honouring of motherhood has long been a widespread custom, and "Fathers' Day" was started by Canon Grant Cowen last year with a view to giving similar prominence and paying a similar tribute to fatherhood. It wa§ hoped that the day would come to be widely observed, and already several other churches have adopted it. The preacher at the morning service at St Matthew's was the' Rev. A. G. Dawson, and Canon Grant Cowen preached in the evening, when an orchestra assisted in the musical part of the service. Canon Grant Cowen pointed out that the human relationship of father and son is patterned on the Divine relationship, and said the father was equally responsible with the mother for, the upbringing of children. . , , After the evening service a number of men accepted an invitation to spend a social half hour in the parish hall.
