WATER ADDED TO MILK.
BIRKENHEAD VENDOR FINED. A charge of selling milk to which water had been added was admitted in the Magistrate's Court yesterday by Alexander Clow, senior (Mr. Northcroft). A health inspector said defendant was a farmer-vendor in the Birkenhead district. ■As a result of numerous complaints witness recently took samples out of five different cans of milk from defendant's farm. He found that one sample contained 21 per cent, of added water and the others amounts varying from, 10 per cent, to 16 per. cent. Defendant had been convicted some years ago for a similar offence. Counsel suggested that tho addition of tho water to the milk might have been due to the fact that there had been a small hole in a cooler used by defendant. There was no need for defendant to add water as he produced . all the millc ho required Of 156 customers all except three had signed a statement to the effect that they were satisfied with tho milk supplied by • defendant. The Magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, imposed a fine of £lO and costs.
