WOMAN'S FORGIVENESS.
«WIFE IN TEN THOUSAND."
. Mr. Cairns, the magistrate, paid a tri : bute to a wife at a London Police Court lately, when Jeremiah McCarthy, aged 28, & labourer, wis charged with being drunk and disorderly and assaulting his wife. The previous week Mrs. McCarthy said that her husband had often knocked her about. He was a good husband when sober, but a terror when in drink. McCarthy, who had been in custody since the last hearing, was now asked by Mr. Cairns what he thought about it. McCarthy: I am very sorry for what I did.
Mr. Cairns (to the wife): What do you say, Mrs. McCarthy ? Mrs. McCarthy: I am willing to give him another chance.
Mr. Cairns (to defendant): McCarthy, you have got a wife in ten thousand. She is going to forgive you, but you are not worth it, now at least. You have got a lot to make up. I shall remand you in your own recognisances for three months to see how you behave. Turning to the wife, the magistrate said: " Take him away, Mrs. McCarthy, and make a good boy of him."
