BET WITH CONSTABLE.
TOTALISATOR ODDS LAID. INCIDENT AT ELLERSLIE. • As a result of a bet made with a plain clothes constable on the Ellerslie Racecourse on July 4 James Donaldson (Mr. Aekins) was charged in the .Police Court yesterday with laying totalisator odds. He pleaded guilty. " This man was betting right under the shadow of the totalisator during the progress of the Taumarunui Racing. Club's meeting," said Detective-Sergeant Kelly. " A plain clothes constable entered into a bet with;defendant, who previously had taken 20 to 30 bets. Later Detective Nalder and a racecourse inspector interviewed defendant, who said he was "working" for. another man and receiving 30s for the day. Counsel said accused was merely the agent for someone else and he had made half-crown bets. He was a married man with seven children and had been on relief works. Sheer desperation had driven him to betting. The magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, imposed a fine of £5, with tho alternative of 14> days' imprisonment.
