ELLERSLIE TRAINING.

TAUMARUNUI CANDIDATES. A SMART SIX FURLONGS. SUB-EDITOR, GRAND SPIRIT. Tile No. 2 grass v/ns avnilable for galloping at Elloralie on Saturday, wlion some interesting work was performed by candidates for the Taumarunui meeting. The going was heavy :njd thoro were no outstanding gallops, alt' ough several of the horses worked attractively. Catoma went well, within himself over six furlongs in 1.28, running first threo in 45s nnd the second threo in 435. Catoma is training on nicely and should not lack condition for his coming engagements. Cynthia N (Neslvit) and Taneriri (Chaplin) ran their first two furlongs in 2Gs nnd completed five in 1.8 4-5. Cynthia N has never looked better nnd Taneriri promises to be at the top of His form for his Trenthain engagements. Sub-Editor (Cammick) and Grand Spirit (Murray) wore well clear of The Jack Jumper (light boy), who seemed to be going a trifle short, at the conclusion of a smartlyrun six furlongs in 1.20 1-5. It was a nice effort on the part of Sub-Editor and Grand Spirit, both uf whom should perform well in tho hack events at tho Taumarunui meetins. Dark Prince accomplished a useful working gallop ovor a round in 1.50. Dark Prince lias freshened up splendidly since racing at the Auckland Winter Meeting and should give a good account of himself in tho jumping events he contests at tho Taumarunui meeting. Full Measure Goes Well. Manawhenua (Chaplin), Tetrarchate (Parsons) and Full Measure (McTavish) ran their first two furlongs in 25 3-5s and wero together at tho conclusion of fivo furlongs in 1.7 1-5. They all worked well, with Full Measure, on the outside, going best at tho finish. Full Measure is a greatly-improved horse and will not be disgraced in tho open sprint event next Saturday. Wild Country sprinted threo furlongs in 41s and Pal ran the same distanco in 40s. Pal is a three-year-old gelding by Snow King from Marblo Bell,' who iB being trained by M. Ryan. Up to tho present ho has not been seriously tried, but ho is now making steady progress and also showing some promise. Scotland Yard (Parsonß) and Brown Prince (Conquest) covered four furlongs in 64 4-ss. These novices are not being unduly huricd but they aro steadily improving in condition and will be well forward for tho early spring meetings. Waraloon (Fuller) and Great Emblem (L. Hanson) ran an oasy six furlongs in 1.27 2-ss. Waraloon is making stendy improvement and Great Emblem is also doing well, although it will bo some time yet before he is thoroughly ready. Desert Star (Chaplin) went evenly over six furlongs in 1.24 2-5. Dcsort Star is a promising novice who has made n good deal of improvement in the past couple of months. The rising two-year-olds Jewelled Girdle, by Xilbroney from Loloma, and Wliirlalong, by Whirlwind from Lucena, sprinted two furlongs along the back in 2G 3-ss, both hitting out nicely. Jewelled Girdle and Wliirlalong are big youngsters and, although they are fairly forward, may both require time to mature. Gay Cockade's Effort, Gay Cockade (Parsons) was responsible for a nice working gallop over a round in 1.51 4-5, running the last six furlongs in 1.22 4-5. Gay Cockade is not an easy horso to train, but ho has done well in the past few weeks and should bo very close to his best for tho Taumarunui meeting, where he 'will bo a difficult horso to beat in the cfc/ef handicaps. Puriri Park (L. Manson) and Hampton Park (Simpson) were going well wjthin themselves at-the conclusion of fivo furlongs in 1.8 3-5. These horses have both accomplished some good work in the past few weeks and should atrip in capital trim next Saturday. Bennie. after being very slow over the first furlong, completed six furlongs in 1.29 3-5. Bennie is carrying a very bright and healthy appearance, hut has done nothing on the tracks to suggest that his immediate prospects are in any way bright. On tho sand Harbour View and General Lu finished just in front of Town Beauty at the end of seven furlongs, the last six of which were run in 1.22 4-5. Justify (Chaplin) and Patutahi (Olive) were associated in a schooling bout over four hurdles. They infused plenty of dash into their work and Patutahi gave the belter display. Justify hit the third fenco, but otherwise his exhibition was vfcry satisfactory. TAKANINI TRACK WORK. VANDYKE GALLOPS WELL. TAURUA AND GANPAT. The tracks at Takanini had dried up a good deal on Saturday, when a fair nmount of work was performed on the outside of the grass. Taurua (Jones) was kicked along at the end of his work to come away and beat Qanpat (Edwards) by two lengths over six furlongs in 1.20 3-5, Taurua finished strongly, but Ganpat, who is yet backward, had had enough at the end and was not ridden out. Dominican (Moore) was just in front of Vnli (Stewart) at the end of a working gallop over eix furlongs in 1.25 1-5. Dominican is gradually hardening in condition. but there was no merit in tho gallop. Vali waa having his first work-out since starting another preparation and he was out only for an easy gallop. Kodapen finished his work with a sprint up the straight. Ho hits out freely in his work, but is a lean type and may require careful handling. Amber Link (Forsyth), Lady Vane (Craig) and Arch lluler (Gilmer) were in that order at the end of half-a-milo in 62 3-ss. Amber Link, bemdes being speedy, is more forward than the other pair and sho was going away from them at the finish. . Ruffles (Home) jumped away a length clear of Catch Em (Feme) and held him at tho end of six furlongs in 1.20 1-5. Ruf fles could havo done a little better. The work of both horses was done in pleasing style. Catch 'Em is evidently maintaining a steady rate of improvement. Vandyke (Craig) mo"ed very freely over six furlongs in 1.19 2-5, the best of tho morning. He hat freshened up well and should show up at tho Taumarunui meeting on Saturday. Mashoor wus ghen solid work to do his beßt up tho straight. This horse is working more freely, but he does not appear to have yet regained his true form. Tho colt by Brazen-Warwhoop has so far done well in his early preparation, but he may bo givon a further spell in the pnddock before boing tried seriously. W. Goscomb rarely sends St. Ames against tho watch, but tho hurdler is in good, hard condition, and ho may bo one of tho hardest ,to beat in tho Mauunui Hurdles on Saturday. R. S. Fop,by will ride Catoma and Taurua in their engagements at Ellerslio next Saturday. W. J. TOMKINSON'S TRIP. HORSES FROM AUSTRALIA. Tho Addington trainer, W. J. Tomkinson, intonds leaving shortly on a trip to Australia, in which ho will combine business with ploasuro. Ho trades extensively with horses between Now Zealand and Australia, and whon in Auckland recently stated that for every horso he imports to the Dominion, ne exports three or four to Australia. While discussing the question of Australian horses Tomkinson said there appearod to bo sonic opposition to theit* importation on the grounds that they entered New Zealand on false marks on account of the slower tracks across tho insman, and also because ■it was "boosting' 1 tho stock from tho Commonwealth. With regard to tho first point, any horsos brought across hv him wore handicapped right up to thoir Vtest Australian performances, but they improved considerably on New Zealand tracks. He contended that with tho number of horses ho sont to Australia each year, New Zealand was receiving a much greater advertisement for its high-class stock, than was the case with Australian horses coming to the Dominion. He had forwarded a large number of New Zealand horses to Western Australia during the last few years, nnd many of them had put up sterling performances, thus attracting further attention to Now Zealand as a successful brooding-ground for high-grade horses.
