NOTES ON THE FORM.

STEEPLECHASE FIASCO. KAOKAOROA'S BAD LUCK. CLOSE FINISH IN LAST EVENT. f [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] HASTINGS. Saturday,. Tho racing tt Napier Park to-day was full of incident, especially tho Park Steeplechase, which was a chapter of accidents. Of the seven etarters five fell. Tho winner. Pangolin, was exceedingly lucky, as Kaokaoroa, who was leading, elipped nfter landing over tho last jump. Groat Charier, a class horse, although touched in the wind, lasted just long-enough to win tho Winter Oats from the fast-finish-ing Briar Raot. It was really B. 11. Morris' riding that did tho trick. There wd s also a j:reat finish in tho Newstead Hack Handicip, K. Voitro, on Adventus, having a goo:l run on the fence and just managing to win from Baskier by a neck, with Rasouli a neck away third. Warzono won tho Waiohiki Hack Hurdles from The "Warden, with Battlement third. The winner in a fit horse and would have won fairly eatily if ho had not struck the last hurdle hard. Tho Warden and Pat's Boy made mcst of tho running, with Warzone handy. Pal's Boy retired and then Warzono join?d The Warden and worried him out of it. Battlement shaped really well consider.ng his condition. 110 was running on at the finish. Navaho's Narrow Defeat, Navaho was a good thing beaten in the Greenmeadown Hack, as ho had a bad run and then was defeated only by a head by Bevorage, who was well handled by K. Voitro. Moatoa showed paco in tho early stages, with Night Speaker handy. Bapallo showed no form. Beverage looked tfell and is evidently 0:1 the improve. Hystrido also showed improvement on his first day's racing. In most of :ho events in which gentlemen riders tako part tho high-class horseman's mount prevails, and tho Ladioa' Handicap was no exception. Mr. J. Morris, brother of B. H. and L. G. Morris, rode Rory Mor with fine judement and scored easily at the finish. Better handled. False Scent might have troubled the winner. Tho riders of tho first and second horses wore presented wiih gold-mounted whips. There wa3 a good field in tho Winter Oals. Merry Mint and Valsicr being two fresli horses. The betting was fairly well distributed. Royal Songster, Valsier and Arikira beinc best supported. Manifesto and Valsier were tho early leaders, with tho field bunched and Great Charter handy. B. H. Morris mado his run just at tlio right moment and managed to stave off the fastfinishing run of Briar Root. . Royal Songster ran well and was close up fourth. Bead Serang shaped badly and evidently tho race on the first day affected him. Merry Mint was short of a race but did not show much dash. Taranto was left about five lengths and then ran up well at the finish into fifth place. Ho might be a possibility at Hastings. Stesplechase Casualties. The Park Steeplechase was a fiasco. Bon Ay ran fell a; the first jump of the double and Disrank came down at the back of the course when going well. He injured himself seriously. Then Dapper Boy and Iligoletto fell,, and later Winter Day. leaving only Kaokaoroa and Pangolin an tho race. Kaokaoroa was going the better of tho two and jumped the last obstacle first, but slipped, leaning Pangolin to win. The double appears to bo too close to the starting post, as when tho horses jump off they race for the first jump and become crowded, causing accidents. Silver Fern easily accounted for the .trial Handicap from Dick Whittington, who appeared to be a bit sore when doing his preliminary. Crown Jest shaped well and the others only fairly, with Piket last. Adventus won tho last race through having a lucky run on the fence. Arrowzone was the early leader, with Chief Savage handy. Baskier was also well up and came through whei the straight was reached, but Adventus an 3 Rasonli then came fast. The three finished in a line, with Adventus the winner. RACING IN AUSTRALIA. I Te Iloia and Red Lion ran the fir3t four i furlongs in 52Js and were stopping at the j end of a mile in 1.49}. Te Hoia had. no | difficulty i:i defeating his companion. ! who appeared to bo hindered by the heavr going, and he is evidently back to his best form. I Spalpiko moved freely over a couple 'Of rounds, running tho last, mi]e in 2.1 with- ! out being extended. Spalpiko looks none I the. worse for his strenuous racing and I will bo takon to Wellingtori for tho coni- | ing meeting. Trishna ran his first six furlongs in 3.29 and was then picked up by Shamgar and the pair came home together. Tho full distance occupied 1.54. Shamgar, who has only recently resumed work, hit oiu in good style and had a lot in hand at tha finish. Much interest was centred in the rising I two-year-olde, tho Chief Ruler—Seagull gelding, Gainscoirt—Quinkama filly, and Scherzo —Legality gelding when they cantered round to sprint down the straight. The Scherzo youngster, who appears to bo more forward than !iis companions, showed a fine burst of spued to finish in front and his prospects aa an early two-year-old. look bright. Pillinger, has settled in business. Nelson Dillon, who races n the eamo interests, will be given anot ler chance next season, and provided th it he can bo ourcd of his recurring soi lness, ho should bo a useful proposition. Pillinger is now educating a sturdy-lookii g two-year-old by Worthy Bond, from Longli m, and before leaving Epsom for hiu new quarters, the two-year-old was • displaying good promise.
