DERBYSHIRE MATCH.
LEAD ON FIRST INNINGS. RAIN ON THIRD MORNING. NO PLAY BEFORE LUNCHEON. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Special to N.Z. Press Association.) (Received June 37, 12.45 a.m.) LONDON, June 16. Steady rain at Derby throughout the forenoon has prevented a resumption so far 'to-day of the cricket match, New Zealand v. Derbyshire. An inspection of the wicket is to be made after luncheon. Tho New Zealandcrs yestorday 1 had gained a first innings lead of 66 largely owing to a fine ninth-wicket partnership between James and Merritt. There were 3000 spectators, including 1000 children, the guests of tho Mayor of Derby. After the luncheon interval Vivian was stumped when ho jumped out to one from Mitchell. Gromb and Kerr were dismissed leg before. Merritt then joined James with the score at 202 for eight wickets, and the pair proceeded to show most enterprising balsmanship. They placed New Zealand ahead and then forced the pace. James was unfortunate. He attempted a short run and the bowler threw down his wicket. The New Zealand innings closed for 296. Merritt and James had each hit five fours. Derbyshire made a disastrous start in their second innings. Slater was run out through a brilliant return by Blunt. Smith was bowled by a " yorkcr " from Matheson. Alderman was droppod in the slips before he had scored and then made a useful stand with Townsend. This pair had added 79 when stumps were drawn. Wiltshire had a good season. COMING TEST MATCH. CHOOSING ENGLISH TEAM. EYE TO AUSTRALIAN TOUR. LONDON, June 15. It is understood that 'lhe selection committee is restricting the English team in tho test match against the New Zealanders to players young and skilful enough for the next Australian tour. Hobbs and Hendren will probably not be chosen. Hobbs has scored 1000 runs this season.
