CRUSHED IN A QUARRY.
MAN FATALLY IMIJURED. STRUCK BY FALL OF EARTH. DEATH ON WAY TO HOSPITAL. Fatal injuries were received by Mr. George William Drew, aged 28, of 18, Summer Street, Ponsonby, when he'iwas crushed by a fall of earth in a quarry at Waitakaruru, near Miranda, Hauraki Plains, yesterday afternoon. Mr. Drew, who wan single, was employed by tho Public Works Department. Aid was summoned from Thames after the accident and an ambulance containing a doctor and nurse was despatched. On arrival ifc was found that Mr. urew was badly hurt and the amputation of one leg was immediately performed. He also suffered internal injuries. In view of his serious condition an ambulance was summoned from Auckland. Tho call was received at 1.30 p.m. and tho Thames ambulance was met an hour later at Pokeno, where tho patient was transferred. Mr. Drew died soon after the journey to Auckland was recommenced.
