LADIES' HOCKEY.

GROUNDS HAMPER PLAYERS. TOURNAMENT IN AUCKLAND. In spito ol: very unfavourable weather and wet grounds the competitions of the Auckland Ladies' Hockey Association were proceeded with on Saturday. In the senior grade Mount Eden defeated Somerville by 7 goals to 2, Wesley beat Y.W.C.A. by 7 goals to 0, and Clevedon accounted for Papatoetoe by 9 goals to 0. In all games the rain and slippery grounds marred good play, many players finding it difficult to obtain a foothold. There was rio team combination and "hit and run" tactics predominated. In the main senior grade game Somerville was three players short against Mount Eden, and this proved a big handicap. Had its backs been content to play further back the score against Somerville might not have been so large. Miss Lowe, for Eden, was the principal scorer for tl:.e day, netting six of tho seven goals secured by her team. In the Somerville side Mrs. Hamlin and Miss Hill were the outstanding players. Wesley had matters practically its own way against Y.W.C.A., and in spite of the hard work done by the two wings, right-inside and centre-half of the Y.W.C.A. team, Wesley ran out easy winners. Miss Brown, goalkeeper for Y.W.C.A., deserves credit for the manner in which sho blocked many shots. Misses Burton, Simpson, Saunders and both Wesley backs proved themselves equal to the conditions prevailing and did excellent work for their side. Little can be said for the other senior grade game, in which Clevedon far outdistanced its opponents with little apparent effort. The Clevedon team played its usual bustling game, notwithstanding the soft conditions.

The New Zealand Ladies' Llockey Association has allocated the premier ladies' hockey fixture of the Dominion to Auckland this season. The tourney will probably take place during the last week in August or in the lirst ten days of September.
