GREY LYNN TRAM ROUTES.
LINK WITH RICHMOND ROAD. THE PROPOSAL REJECTED. A decision against tho proposal to link up tho end of the new Richmond tramtrack and the old Grey Lynn tram-track was reached by the Auckland transport Board yesterday. Reporting on a petition by residents that these lines be linked and that circular routing be introduced, the manager said the service to the zoo and to Westmere would have 1o be maintained, even if the two lines were joined. ■ "To introduce circular routing and maintain the zoo and Westmere service,' said Mr. Ford, "the number of trips run between Ambury's Corner and tho city would bo increased by" 84 a day. To give the same* headway on. Richmond Road a similar headway would'have'to be maintained on the Grey Lynn route to Ambury's Corner,- a,nd would involve an additional mileage of 189,535 miles a year, which' at a cost of; 13.36 d a car mile (which only includes' running, power and permanent way maintenance -charges) amounts'to £10,553 a year. This extra mileage would be run with an infinitesimal increase in traffic receipts. Such an expenditure would be out of all proportion to tho requirements of the district and would be a burden on the remainder of the undertaking." The manager therefore recommended that the petitioners be informed that the expense involved in serving this district in the manner suggested was prohibitive. However, to improve the facilities ho recommended that the singlctrack Richmond Road terminal line be extended by approximately 150 yds., bringing it to a point near Castle Street, at a cost of £I6OO, and that the first stopping place from the suggested terminus be reinstated in its old position. He adhered to his •previous recommendation that the single track between* Ambury's Corner and Castle Street be removed. The report was} adopted.;
