DISTRESS AT MILLERTON.
POSITION OF CHILDREN. EDUCATION BOARD APPROACHED [tiy telegraph.'—press association.] . NELSON", Tuesday. A; telegram has been sent by Mr. H. E. Holland, Leader of the Labour Party, to the Nelson Education Board, staling that •so desperate was the position at Millerion that-parents' had decided -to remove the children from the school unless fr.ed-meals were provided. When tho matter was brought before the board, the chairman, the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, M.L.C., said there was .much more justification for relief than there was a year ago; A Member:' Why? T.he mines are not closed and they, do Jiot supply as much coal as the Government has ordered. Why is it that the coal is not forthcoming and tjiat thero is "distress among miners ? The chairman replied apparently Millerton coal was not suitable for railways. Tho Millerton mine had worked only 49 days this year. Jle knew there was considerable distress to-day. How far the question of relief came within the jurisdiction of the board ho was not in a position to say.
The chairman was deputed to interview tho.Minister of Education to see what could bo done.

Tho Minister asked tho Buller Hospital Board to give attention to the matter, and he has received a-reply from tho board that four cases of distress at Millerton were relieved on Saturday and no others havo been reported.
