LEAGUE FOOTBALL.
MARIST DEFEATS RICHMOND. ORDERING OFF AND INJURIES. A fairly large crowd, attended Carlaw Park on Saturday in anticipation of a good gamo in the senior championship replay between Marist and Richmond. The spectators, however, witnessed a poor display of League football, besides several incidents of rough play, which for some time went unchecked. Marist had a comfortable lead of eight points at half-time but play was more even in the second half. The good spirit shown in the first spell changed with the closer scores and much unnecessary tackling resulted. Carter, a Marist forward, was ordered ofT. More glaring instances, bowever, escaped the referee's notice beforehand. Gregory and Campbell, both of Marist, retired with injuries, the last-named being badly hurt. Marist's backs were superior throughout and the aid© won by 13 points to 7. Davis early missed with a penalty kick for Richmond, and Gregory started a passing bout on Marist's dead-ball line. Brady carried play back to midfield. A nice run by Brisbane brought the crowd to its feet but a wild pass to Gregory went astray. Young, however, took the ball to Richmond s line, where Leo made a bad mistake and Campbell scoied. Gregory kicked a fine goal. From a penalty in a good position Davis opened Richmond's score. Brady made a beautiful opening and the Marist backs went within a foot of Ricbmonds line. Lawless was penalised for offside play and Gregory again kicked a goal. Lee was injured in a hard tackle and retired, Patterson taking his place. From a scrum near Richmond's twenty-five Hassan set Marist's backs in motion and Brady ran strongly to score near the corner. Gregory failed to convert, and balf-tiimo came with the score:—Marist, 10; Richmond, 2. Davis soon added two points to Richmond's score with a penalty goal. A good run by Johnson resulted in Young racing across unopposed. Gregory failed to convert. Brady made a great run through the Richmond backs and kicked over the bne. In a race for possession List just missed scoring. The Richmond forwards rushed play 1o tho Marist line, where Lawless snapped up tho ball in the loose and scored. Davis failed to convert. Players of both sides resorted to illegitimate tactics and somo rough play was witnessed. Carter, a Marist back, was ordered ofl. Within a few minutes Marist lost Gregory and Campbell, the side thus being reduced, to ten players. The gamo ended:—Marist, 13; Richmond, 7. Mr. V. Simpson was referee.
