LINER FROM ENGLAND.
FEW PASSENGERS CARRIED. ONLY THREE IN FIRST CLASS. The Shaw, Savill and Albion liner lonic, which berthed at Auckland yesterday from England, brought only 29 passengers. Three of these, all women, travelled first-class, the remainder being third-class. The vessel left London with two more first-class passengers, also women, who left the ship at Colon. When the lonic arrived at London from New Zealand it was .understood that she was to be withdrawn from the service in which she has been running, in conjunction with the Corinthic and Athenic, for many years, and she was withdrawn from the outward sailing list. Passengers who had booked or wished to book by the lonic were transferred to another vessel. It was then decided to despatch the vessel to New Zealand ports, as cargo was offering, and an endeavour was made during the month preceding her departure to obtain passengers, but only 29 availed themselves of the opportunity.
