INSULATING MATERIAL.
USE CF PUMICE ADVOCATED WORK FOR LOCAL INDUSTRY. An appeal for tho use of pumico insulation in engineering nnrl heating works of various kinds has been received by tho Auckland Manufacturers' Association from firtis which prepare tho pumice insulation locally. Tho letter received mentioned that cork for insulation had to be imported from foreign countries. Tho production cost of pumice was almost solely for labour in handling, and large quantities of local coal was used for kiln drying. Tho transport was done by tho New Zealand railways. It was claimed that tho actual cost of nn insulated chamber was lower with pumice insulation than with cork. Owing lo the need to conserve space, tho letter pointed out, cork had an advantage on steamers, even nt a higher cost, but for local meat works, dairy factories and freezing works space was no consideration.
