GREY LYNN TRAMS.
EFFECT OF NEW FACILITIES. TRACK REMOVAL OPPOSED. Opposition to the Auckland Transport Board's proposal to remove the tramlines at the old Grey Lynn terminus, from Francis Street to Surrey Crescent, was expressed by a, deputation from the West Lynn Householders'" Association, to the board yesterday. Messrs. C. A. Watts and P. Ellis comprised the deputation. With the opening of the Richmond Road extension to Grey Lynn last February, the board's manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, recommended that, as the district contiguous to the old terminus was much better served by the new line, the necessary authority should be sought to cancel the service from Surrey Crescent to Francis Street and that the 390vds. of track should be removed, as it could be put in good condition only by expensive reconstruction work. The board deferred consideration of the recommendation for three months.
Pointing out that tliero wore only 17 paces between the two termini at present, Mr. Watts urged that a great, service would be rendered to tho people to the benefit of tho board's revenue if tho two ends were connected and the service run right through. Mr. Ellis also emphasised the possibilities of the service if the two routes were linked. At present, ho said, the board was not obtaining half of tho revenue it should. Mr t J. A. C. Allum, chairman of tho board, said the question of uplifting tho rails was being confused with circular routeing. The latte; - proposal would involve much more expense than tho laying of a short, length of lino (o join the two termini. The relaying of the whole length at. the expense of several thousand pounds would be necessary.
The matter, together with the deputa tion's representations, was referred to the board-in-committec.
