RATES STILL UNPAID.
POSITION IN WELLINGTON.
"BETTER THAN IN AUCKLAND."
[BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WELLINGTON, Tuesday.
In a discussion which preceded the appointment of a committee by the Wellington City Council to curtail the estimates, the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, slated that the amount outstanding in rates at the end of the financial year was £23,000, about twice as much as the usual au-ount. It represented per cent, of the rates.
Tho position, however, said the Mayor, was very much better than in Auckland, which had 10 per cent, outstanding, and in Christchurch, which had 8j per cent, owing. This reflected tho stability of Wellington ratepayers in quite a favourable light.
Outstanding rates were included in the balance-sheet as assets, as they were a first charge on property.
