MATCHES IN AUCKLAND. GOOD SCORING DIFFICULT. COMPETITION. AT MIDDLEMORE. "Weather conditions at Middlemore were most unpleasant on Saturday when members of the Auckland Golf ,Club played in the George Cup competition. Heavy rain fell throughout the day and with a strong, northerly wind good scoring was particularly difficult. Out of the 120 entrants, 80 took part in the George Cup competition. Conditions for the cup have been altered this year, players returning the best eight cards in a qualifying round to play off in match play, the winner to be the holder of the trophy for th«j year. Following were the best cards returned, the last three players having to play off for the last two places:—R. G. Rainger (3), all square; H. A. Joyce (8), 'all square: R. J. King (14), all square; H. Tidmarsh (4), 1 down; E. C. Pare (11), 2 down; D. MacCorniick (5), 2 down; E .Friedlander (12), 3 down; W. S. Ralph (scr), 3 down; A. Donald (2). 3 down. The captain's tourney reached the semifinals stage on Saturday when the following matches were played:—W. S. Kalph (scr) beat 11. A. Joyce (11), 5 and 4; R. G. Rainger (4) beat V. W. Wilson (5), 4 and 3; R. J. King (20) beat H. V. Coverdale (5), 2 and 1. The match between Dr. It. W, Johnson and J. P. Aldred has yet to be played. MAUNGAKIEKIE CLUB. Members of Maungakiekie Golf Club played the third round of the Kingswell Shield competition at One Tree Hill on Saturday. The course was in splendid condition in spite of the heavy rain experienced, but the scoring was not too good. The match resulted in a tie between H. Morpeth, A. K. Hawley and L. B. Schnauer, who each returned a score of 3 down. The bogey match played in conjunction was won by W. Calderwood with a fine card of 1 up. Other good cards were:— J. B. Shanly, 1 down W. J. Smeeton, H.
