METHODS OF REDUCTION. CONSTRUCTION PROBLEMS. Tho much discussed subject of "Earthquakes and Building Construction" was dealt with in an address given by Mr.C. R. Ford to a, largo audience in th« University College Hall last evening. Th» lecture was arranged under the joint auspices of the Auckland Institute and Museum and the Workers' Educational Association!
With the aid of a selection from his extensivo collection of earthquake photographs and diagrams Mr. Ford illustrated some of the common causes of failure to withstand earthquake shocks in brick, stono and wboden buildings and explained how tho risk could be greatly reduced. The closing part of the lecture was devoted to showing how buildings could be adapted to meet the earthquake risks of this country without undue expense and without any sacrifice of architectural ap-
pearance. Tho thanks of tho audience were expressed at the close of the lecture by th« chairman, Professor C. It. Knight.
