REPAIRING BROKEN CABLE.
IRIS AT NORFOLK ISLAND.
ROUGH WEATHER DELAYS WORK
Stormy weather is delaying the cable steamer Iris, which is carrying out repair work to a break in the Pacific cable 15 miles from Norfolk Island. The vessel sailed from Auckland last Monday and on her arrival at the island sho was unable to commence operations owing to an easterly gale and rough seas. The weather moderated sufficiently yesterday morning for the Iris to pick up the Norfolk Island portion of the broken cable, but- beforo it could be joined up to the other portion a recurrence of bad weather necessitated the Iris buoying the cable and returning to Norfolk Island to await a further improvement in conditions.
