RIOTS AT CAWNPORE.
EVIDENCE AT INQUIRY. POLICE FORCE TOO SMALL. (Received Ma*' 10, 5.5 p.m.) DELHI, May 9. At tho inquiry into the recent riots at Cawnporo tho Superintendent of Police. Mr. Rogers, stressed the insufficiency of tho force of 600 police, with which he was expected to copo with tho troubles, which spread in a few hours over the whole city.
Complete control could not be obtained for two or three days, nor until the arrival of reinforcements. Ilis 600 men were expected to disperse tho crowds everywhere, to arrest rioters, search houses for arms, escort people, provide guards for tha telegraph lines and two post offices, relieve patrols, and rush to places when appeals for protection came. The police worked themselves to tho point of exhaustion. The majority of the force had no relief for 48 hours, and still complaints were made against the police methods
