AUCKLAND AMATEUR CLUB. FIRST COMPETITION HELD. Enthusiasm was displayed by the fourteen members of the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club who competed in the club's initial race of the season on Saturday under ideal conditions. Tho race, which was the first over the new course, over a distance of Si miles, resulted in Hall scoring an easy win from Jones and Gray, who were very evenly matched in their final sprint. Results were as follows: —E. Hall, 2m, 1; C. Jones. 3m, 2; R. L. Gray, 3m, 3; 11. M. McElroy, scr, 4. H. M. McElroy. scr, registered fastest time with 22m 12s. MANUKAU AMATEUR CLUB. The Manukau Amateur Cycling Club held junior and senior road races on Saturday. The junior event, of 5i miles, was contested by a field of 12, the scratch men being II V. Gordon and A. W. D. RobinSO n who were conceding starts up to 2m 403' Fine team work by the throe riders off the 30 seconds mark was responsxble for them filling all three places, while Gordon outsprinted Robinson to record fastest time and to finish fourth, only 15 seconds behind the winner. The results were;—J. H. McLachlun, 30s, 1; I. C Be! mi. 30s, 2; S. Pinfold. 30s, 3; H. V. Gordon, scr, 4. 11. V. Gordon's time of 14m 27s was the fastest recorded. Team work was again in evidence in the senior event, which attracted a field of 13. R. G. Foubister rode alone from scratch and gave away starts tip to 2m 30s. Claik and Baird, who eventually filled the premier 1 places, rode a sterling race. When they had completed three of the required four laps they were three seconds better on time than tho scratch rider Foubister. Fotibislcr made ft wonderful rally tn® final circuit and trained 42 seconds on Clark and Baird. Clark won by three-quarters of a. length, with only a wheel separating Baird and Spragg. There were thirteen starters in the Auckland Cycle Club's race of 201 miles on Saturday. The race was marred by the fact that ten of the competitors had punctures, j H. Wade and S. Litchfield occupied the scratch murk, with F. Lowndes, 71m, the limit man. Entering the last half-lap there were only four liders remaining in the race including Litchfield, who had punctured. but had been fortunate enough to borrow another inaohino.
