RELICENSING MOTORS.
ISSUE OF NEW PLATES.
FEW APPLICATIONS MADE.
PROMPT ATTENTION REQUESTED
Although the period for the relicensing of motor-vehicles commenced over a week ago, on May 1, only 2400 sets of new number-plates had been issued up to Saturday morning. Jt was originally hoped that there would be about 600 applicants daily, as there as some 15,000 vehicles to be reliccnsed, and the period expires on May 31. Ihe owner of any vehicle carrying the present black and white plates on or after June 1 is liable to prosecution.
A special staff has been transferred to Iho Wellesley Street Tost Office to deal with tho applications for new plates, but there was little work on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of week. 'J he staff was sufficient to deal with more than twice tho business, and it is feared that tho last week will develop into an exceptionally busy rush period. It is in their own interests that motorists are advised to apply early, as any undue delay will result in applicants waiting in long queues for attention, while at present they can be attended to promptly.
Members of the Auckland Automobile Association may receive assistance in the filling in of the two forms at a temporary bureau established next door to the Wellesley Street Post Office. Other drivers who aro not members of the association are reminded that they have to fill in two forms this year instead of three, as was Ihe case last year. The blue form is tho application for plates, and includes a statement giving tho approximate mileage covered by tho car during the past 12 months. The white form is for the owner's nomination of an insurance company to carry his compulsory third party risk. Tiles of both blue and white forms are arranged on desks in the public office, and applicants are first required to fill in one of each. Theso aro then to be taken to a clerk who will check the particulars, especially the engine and chassis numbers, with the official registration card filed at the office when the vehicle was first put on the road. The applicant will then receive his checked papers and registration card, which will be handed to a, second clerk, with the required sum, £3 2s 6d, in the case of an ordinary private car.
Drivers arc also reminded that they must have their new driving licences before June 1.
