NEW REGISTRATIONS.

REDUCTION IN AUCKLAND. [riY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] CERISTCHURCII, Sunday. The first return of unemployment under the new system of registration was furnished by the Minister of Labour, Hon. S. G. Smith. It. shows that for the week ended May 4 there were 36,921 men registered as unemployed. Of this number, 23,950 men were placed through the various bureaux during the week, leaving 12,971 unemployed. Following is a summary of tho returns for the principal centres, showing the total registrations, the numbers engaged- on relief works and the numbers for which no such provision was made: — Appli- Temporarily Unemcations. Relief works under No. 5 scheme were suspended from April 11 to 27 and during that period a new register of unemployed Was compiled. Eight weekly returns of registrations under the former conditions wero issued. The maximum number of registrations was 38,028 on March 30; the largest number of men employed on relief schemes, 26,037, during the week ended April 6, and the largest number without relief work was 17,315, in the week ended March 2. Detailed comparison of the last two returns shows a reduction in the Auckland registrations of 1856, Wellington 4, Christchurch 699 and Invercargill 86. The Dunedin total is 962 higher and that for other towns 1046 higher. Since March 30 the Auckland total has declined 3973, Wellington 1217 and Christchurch 463. Dunedin has increased 766, Invercargill 5 and other towns 3875.

The registrations in Auckland on March 30 are the highest ever recorded. The total of 8545 comprised 5591 mei with dependants and 2954 without dependants. The latest return shows a reduction of 3584 in the number with dependants and of 389 in the number without dependants.

NO CONFIDENCE IN BOARD. RESOLUTION AT DUNEDIN. [BY TELEGRAPH.—rRESS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN. Sunday. A meeting of unemployed and relief workers on Saturday afternoon passed a resolution that unemployed and relief workers should refuse to pay further unemployment levies. The meeting also passed a resolution expressing lack of confidence in the Unemployment Board as at present constituted.
