ABSENTEE SECTIONS. FIRST SALE ARRANGED. [FUO.M OUIt OWN CO R R KSPOX BEN T. ] TAURANGA, Saturday. It was reported at tho meeting of tho Tauranga County Council this week that progress was being made in the matter of disposal of "absentee" sections. The first sale of these lands was fixed for May 16, when five areas would bo offered, four of 50 acres each in the Apata parish and one of 637 acres in the To Papa parish. The clerk stated the matter was one of interest, not only as affecting the clearing up of uncollectaiile rates, but also because it was reasonable to believe that theso waste areas would become productive lands.
Correspondence was received in reference to the proposed deviation of the Paengaroa-Maketu Road. Tho survey of the new road has been completed as part of th" Maketu consolidation scheme survey, and legalisation will be effected in conjunction with other roads provided under that scheme. It was not proposed to close formally the existing road. Tho formation would bo carried out under No. 5 relief scheme.
It was decided that warning signs for motorists be erected on roads in the vicinity of various schools in the county. It, was agreed that a special meeting be held on May 20 to consider applications for subsidies on tho main highways estimates. It was decided to mnko representations to the Minister of Labour for legislation to enable local bodies to contribute toward the expenses of local unemployment committees.
