DECLINE IN FOOD PRICES.
FURTHER FALL IN MARCH. COST OF LIVING LOWER. A further substantial reduction in the retail prices of food is shown by the Government Statistician's calculation of the index number as at March 15. It shows a decrease of 36 points from the February number and represents prices as only 26.4 per cent, above those for July, 1914. Meat prices especially fell during the month. The general level of them is now only 5.6 per cent, above July, 1914, prices. Since January, 1930, retail prices havo fallen 207 points—equal to the total decline in the preceding eight years. Combining tho latest food prices index with the February indexes for other prices, the Statistician gives the " all groups " prico level for March as 49.1 per cent, ahovo the pre-war base " so that it now takes £1 9s lOd on tho average to purchase what could have been purchased for £1 in July, 1914." A year ago, the "cost of living" was 58.8 per cent, above the pre-war level.
