DESTRUCTION BY FIRE.
FOUR SHOPS AT TANEATUA. SOME OF CONTENTS SAVED. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] WHAKATANE, Saturday. Four shops at Taneatua were destroyed by fire at . 1.30 this morning. They were occupied by Mr. G. C. Peebles, general storekeeper; Mr. E. M. Bryenton, butcher; Mr. McColl, saddler; and Mrs. Sutherland, milliner. The contents of (he shops of Mr. McColl and Mrs. Sutherland were removed to safety. The buildings were valued at over £2OOO, and the contents of Messrs. Peebles' and Bryenton's shops were estimated to be worth £2OOO. Insurances are held in the State Office. Mr. Bryenton's stock was not insured. OUTBREAK AT PUKEKOHE. FLAMES CHECKED IN TIME. [UY TELEGRAPH. OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PUKEKOHE, Saturday. Shortly before 7 o'clock this evening the fire brigade received a call to the rear block of (he Central Boarding House, which is situated in the main street and which has been unoccupied for some weeks. On making an entry into the building the firemen found an incipient fire in the passage and another in a back room. There was a smell of kerosene and the flames were travelling up tho scrim and paper. They were quickly extinguished and the total damage was only slight. Incendialism is suspected. The alarm was given \by an employee in near by premises. *
The building comprises two storeys, with 10 rooms in each storey. It connects with a building of a storey and ahalf, which forms the front portion of the boarding house.
