THE SPRINT CONTEST.

MANAWHENUA SCORES NICELY STABLE DOUBLE FOR H. RAMA. ROYAL RULER'S GOOD RACE. Manawhenua, fifth favourite in a field of seven, completed a winning double for H. Kiuna. when he scored a comfortable victory in the Flying Handicap. It was a good betting race and the favourites were British King, Lady's Boy and Hampton Parle.

Oration was smartest to begin, but ho was joined before going a furlong by Hampton Park and Manawhenua, when Royal Uuler and British King also ran up handy. Hampton Park and Manawhenua carried on the running across the top and they were the leaders into (he straight from Royal Killer and British King. Nothing had a chance with Manawhenua at the finish and he won by a length from Royal Ruler, who defeated British King by two lengths. Lady's Boy was fourth, succeeded by Humptoil Park and Rafflight.

The winner drew the extreiue outside at the barrier but went out very fast and was always going liko a winner. Royal Ruler ran a good race under conditions that were not entirely to his liking. British King looked likely when ho challenged on the rails at tho foot of tho straight but could mako no impression nt tho finish. Lady's Boy was cut off early and then shuck further trouble at the half-mile. Under tho circumstances ho ran quite a good race to finish fourth. <

GLENA BAY'S HURDLES WIN. NARROW MARGIN AT FINISH. Glena Bay was a better favourite than Archeen for the Porua Bay flack Hurdles and in a close finish he just prevailed. Once ,the field had settled down Land Measure was put several lengths from Archeen, with Foxhound, Manga King and Glena Bay following at intervals. Land Measure, Archeen and Foxhound were in close company along the back and to tho home turn, where Glena Bay was coming- fast. There was little between Archeen and Glena liny at the Inst fence an:l Glena Bay finished the stronger to win by a neck. Foxhound was a length and a-half away third, followed by Manga King and Land Measure, who nearly fell at tho last fence.

Glena Bay was patiently ridden by 11. Dulieu and finished too strongly for Archeen, who was steadied by Jlis rise in weight.
