THE SHOOTING SEASON.

SOME PARTIES FORTUNATE.

OTHERS FARE BUT POORLY. BIRDS DESERT THE SWAMPS. The shooting season is now well under way and satisfactory bags have been secured in some quarters. The arrival of 116 brace of clucks for an Auckland firm of butchers by train from Ilotorua on Saturday morning, and further consignments from other districts throughout the day, indicated (hat (lie unfavourable weather ou Friday morning had not prevented some sportsmen, at least, from securing good results.

Owing to the rise in (he level of the Waikato River, and tho birds deserting the swamps to a. considerable extent, the flights in tho Rangiriri district are reported to have been poor. Mr. F. Seccombc and a party of Auckland sportsmen, who shot from Thompson's lagoon, secured the limit for five guns on Friday morning, and on Saturday morning took 80 ducks.

Generally speaking the bags were below expectations, the experience of Mr. Seccombe's party being an exception. In the Taupiri district the shooting has not been so good as it was last year. The ducks on Friday were flying high and were very wild. Mr. A. Charles' party of three returned with a bag of 16 ducks and most of the others have met with less success.
