MARINE DEPARTMENT.
RETIREMENT OF OFFICERS. Two officers of the Marine Department who retired last week on superannuation as part of the Government's retrenchment scheme are Mr. J. Kydd, of Epsom, chief inspector of machinery and surveyor of ships at Auckland, and Mr. W. Carson, surveyor of ships. Mr. Kydd is a native of Scotland and lias spent the last 30 years in New Zealand. Before ho joined the Government service 25 years ago he was an engineer for the Canterbury Frozen Meat • Company. In the Government service he was stationed first at Wellington and later at Napier and at Hamilton. He was transferred to Auckland in 1920 and two years later was appointed to the position of chief surveyor, which he held till the end of Inst month. Mr. Carson is a native of Dunedin and learned engineering in the service of the Union Steam Ship Company. He was third engineer on the Wairarapa at the time she was wrecked on the Great Barrier in 1894, with the loss of 130 lives. Later Mr. Carson was on the staff of the Portland Cement Company and for the last 13 years he has held the post of surveyor of ships at Auckland.
