SLEEPING IN THE OPEN.
PLIGHT OF UNEMPLOYED. SINGLE MEN IN DUNEDIN. [BY TELEG RATH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ] DUNEDIN, Sunday. Single men listed among the unemployed arc sleeping out in Dunedin. On Thursday night, when the weather was extremely cold, 40 homeless and penniless men sought havens in bush areas and open spaces. About 1000 single men are unemployed in the city. Many of them are strangers and through the force of circumstances they have been compelled to sleep in the various reserves. Their cheerless and vagrant lives are disturbing social workers.
•' Unfortunately it is only too true," said the Rev. Bryan King, of the Mission House, when asked to-day to verify the report. '' Men have told me that they have been sleeping out for some, considerable time, and there is absolutely no reason to doubt them. They looked as if they had been sleeping without a roof over their heads. Without money their plight is desperate."
