UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD.
REPRESENTATIVE. ATTITUDE OF THE UNIONS. INACTION POLICY FAVOURED. [BY TEMJCU.mi.—rnERS ASSOCIATION".] WELLINGTON. Sunday. A circular lias boon issued to all unions proposing that there should be no nominations foi tlio position of workers representative on the Unemployment Board rendered vacant through the retirement of Mr. W. Bromley. The opinion in trades union circles is said to be unanimous that no action will be taken from that quarter to fill the vacancy on (he ground that the Minister has the right to make the final choice and not the unions.
Nominations close on May 21 and already one or two unions have decided to fake no part in the appointment of the member. Tlio unions affiliated with the Alliance of Labour and the New Zealand Labour Party condemn the Unemployment Act.
Jf. is stated that Mr. W. T. Young, formerly secretary of tlio Wellington Seamen's Union, has been nominated for the vacancy, but that there is a proviso for his withdrawal which will operate at the dictation of the unions.
AID FOR RETURNED MEN. SCHEME AT NGARUAWAHIA. CRAZING AND OAT CROP. [FJIOM Ol'R OWV COIUIESI'ON DENT. ] HAMILTON, Saturday. A scheme for the relief of unemployed returned soldiers is being carried out at Ngaruawahia. An area of land has been obtained free of rent, and it is being cleared with I lie idea of sowing it in grass. The pasture will be grazed and the area later will be put down in oats. It is hoped to sell the grazing rights and the oat crop, and the proceeds will go toward the fund for giving relief to returned men in need.
