A NEW COMPETITION.
" CONTACT " PHOTOGRAPHY. In order to encourage this most interesting hobby, a " contact " photographic competition is now open to girls and boys. It will be solely for "contact" photographs, and a cash* prize of 5s will be given for the best collection of photographs (not less than four) sent in by the end of April. By following instructions, you will be able to secure a very interesting collection of photographs of such objects as plant leaves, birds' feathers, etc., these being as permanent as anything taken with a camera.
\ou take the photograph direct on to the printing-out pitper. Arrange the leaves or feathers, or other small, semitransparent objects neatly ou the paper, then place a piece of clean glass flat on top. Several specimens can be arranged on the one sheet of paper. Expose to the light—not direct sunlight —until sufficient depth of colour is produced, then tone and fix the print in the ordinary way. After a little practice you will be able to judge when sufficient exposure has been made. It is necessary to gain that knowledge, because you cannot inspect the print half-way, so to speak. Interference with it is bound to cause one or more of the specimens to shift a trifle, with the result that you get u blurred photograph. Take care that whatever you photograph in this way is perfectly clean and dry. or the object may stain or even stick to the paper. You will find it a great convenience to place the paper on a large piece of stiff cardboard; this ensures that it will lie perfectly fiat when weighted down by the covering-glass.
Open to all readers of " Girls and Boys," Work must be your own unaided effort. "Contact" Photographs Only.
All requests for return of photographs must be accompanied by stamps for postage.
Mark envelopes "Girls' and Boys Photographic Competition."Closing date, April £O.
